Faithful Through the Unknown
When this ministry began, we did not have a master plan. We simply had a calling.
We could not see the road ahead, but we knew we were being asked to step forward in faith.
12 years later, Roots & Wings is still far from having all the answers. We are still being stretched. We are still being called to trust.
But along the way, God has been faithful to teach us. Here are 12 of those lessons.
12 Ministry Lessons Worth Sharing
1. Obedience matters more than having all the details worked out
Looking back, every meaningful step forward began with a yes, not a perfect plan.
2. Following Christ requires surrender
Following Christ means laying down comfort, control, reputation, desire and sometimes even our own very good ideas. Ministry has a way of stripping you down to the bones, and in that moment, shaping you.
3. We are not enough, but God is
God has used and continues to use the flawed and imperfect to accomplish sacred work, making it abundantly clear that any and all accomplishments are His.
4. Faithfulness matters more than visibility
Much of ministry happens quietly; without recognition, applause, or medals. But God is present in the unseen places.
5. Discipline and order bring security
Structure does not limit love, it protects it. Clear expectations, consistent routines and healthy boundaries create safety, especially for children who have known chaos and trauma.
6. Love is not a feeling; it is a choice lived out daily
Love is not defined by a warm fuzzy feeling. Real love shows up consistently, corrects when needed, stays when it would be easier to leave, and chooses action over sentiment.
7. Loss does not equal failure
People come and go, and each season has purpose. We give thanks for the time we were entrusted with each person and for the way they shaped this ministry while they were here.
8. In every trial, God is teaching us something
Difficult seasons should never be wasted. Every challenge carries with it a lesson, if we are willing humble ourselves enough to learn. Growth often comes wrapped in discomfort, and wisdom is formed in perseverance.
9. Time passes quickly, so being present matters deeply
Our time with each child and family is limited. We have learned to be fully present; to listen, to notice, to share and to engage.
10. Sharing Christ is urgent, not optional
Sharing the Gospel is not something to postpone. The need is real, the brokenness is deep, and tomorrow is not guaranteed.
11. Childlike joy is necessary
Moments of play and laughter are healing. In a job marked by trauma and hardship, joy becomes an act of hope. And adults need that reminder just as much as children do.
12. The story God is writing is bigger and better than we can imagine
So many moments that felt like setbacks were actually redirection. God’s work has stretched far beyond my expectations, reminding me again and again that He is the Author and that His plans are always perfect.
